Aaron Hoffman has published Building Trust: Overcoming Suspicion in International Conflict. (SUNY Press, 2006). In this book, Professor Hoffman argues that conventional arguments fail to account for two factors governments fear and wish to protect themselves from: domination by outside parties and political competition from internal parties. He argues that trusting relationships emerge in response to argreements that insulate goverenments from these worst-case scenarios by guaranteeing them voice in collective decisions and offering them concessions designed to mollify internal opponents. Professor Hoffman shows that trusting relationships can only be built with the development of institutional mechanisms designed to reduce the consequences of betrayal.
Bert Rockman has co-edited The Oxford Handbook of Political Institutions (Oxford University Press, USA; 5th edition (September 1, 2006)) The study of political institutions is among the founding pillars of political science. With the rise of the 'new institutionalism', the study of institutions has returned to its place in the sun. This volume provides a comprehensive survey of where we are in the study of political institutions, covering both the traditional concerns of political science with constitutions, federalism and bureaucracy and more recent interest in theory and the constructed nature of institutions. The Oxford Handbook of Political Institutions draws together a galaxy of distinguished contributors drawn from leading universities across the world.
Harry Targ has published Challenging Late Capitalism, Neo-Liberal Globalization, and Militarism: Building a Progressive Majority (Changemaker, 2006). The volume addresses the human tragedy of Katrina as a metaphor for the impact of late capitalism and imperialism on the lives of workers. After analyzing capitalism today, its international manifestations, and the uses of militarism, Targ examines progressive movements in U.S. history and discusses what can be learned from the past to build a progressive majority today.
